Barley project taken to Prime Minister Date Published: 2011-07-06
Barley project taken to Prime Minister Ambitious plans to grown barley in Namibia took centre stage recently during a courtesy visit of representatives of Namibia Breweries (NBL) to Prime Minister Nahas Angula. The team lead by Desmond van Jaarsveld, Managing Director, gave an update on the feasibility study which has meanwhile commenced with a seeding event on 17 June at Omahanene, Omusati Region.

Earlier NBL announced it has teamed up with stakeholders to conduct a feasibility study and trials to establish Namibia’s potential to supply some of the company’s malted barley requirements. Currently, NBL procures its entire barley requirements from Europe. Says Desmond van Jaarsveld: ”We have secured the support of our Namibian government through the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, the University of Namibia, and the support of experts in seeds and barley malting.” He adds that NBL and the project partners aim to create a reliable market for Namibian growers of barley while contributing to employment creation in the country.

Namibian barley growing project takes off Date Published: 2011-07-06
Namibian barley growing project takes off A partnership aimed at establishing the feasibility of growing barley in Namibia has taken off with a ceremonial seeding event held on 17 June at Omahenene Research station in the Omusati region with guest of honour John Mutorwa, Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry.

Following initial discussions in 2010 with Epia (O&L’s Empowerment partner), and subsequent involvement of NBL’s barley suppliers in Europe the idea was born to commission the feasibility of growing barley in Namibia. Malted barley, hops and water are the only three ingredients used in the brewing of NBL’ Reinheitsgebot beer.

Says Desmond van Jaarsveld, Managing Director of NBL, “I am happy to say that we have received a tremendous support and goodwill from various sectors specifically the Ministry of Agriculture, University of Namibia (UNAM), our Empowerment partner Epia, and not least by our barley suppliers.”

The study is to be conducted in two phases: Phase 1 encompasses scientific trials on a number of barley varieties which may be suitable to Namibia’s climatic conditions and ultimately properties in line with NBL’ Reinheitsgebot brewing standards. Phase 2 will determine the best malting options.

Malting is a value adding process whereby grains are made to germinate by soaking in water, then halted from germinating further by drying them with hot air.

Marco Wenk, Managing Director of Broll Namibia has announced that construction at the Southern mall extension is nearing completion, with the Northern mall extension’s completion date having been set for end of June 2011.

“Several major retailers have received their shops for fit-out which can take up to 2 – 3 months to complete especially for the bigger shops such as Edgars and Truworths. We are extremely excited that everything is on track and can say with confidence that we are on schedule and all major tenants trading in the southern mall, located next to our upper parking area, will be open for trade by the end of March 2011. Tenants trading on the northern mall side above the taxi rank will commence trading as from 1 June 2011.”

Upon completion, Wernhil Park will boast with some new and exciting shops, which will be a first for Namibia such as Mr Price Sport and DFX. The new Edgars store opening on 1 June 2011, and which is sure to dazzle all existing and new clients, will be one of the largest retailers yet to open in Namibia. Wernhil will furthermore add approximately 750 parking bays as part of its extension, increasing its total parking bays to approximately 1,500. “We also look forward to the new taxi rank facility which was completely redesigned to ensure a more efficient traffic flow to enable more taxi vehicles to pass through the facility at a faster rate”, continued Marco Wenk. “The new taxi rank has been designed by traffic engineers with both the taxi drivers and passengers in mind, thus ensuring increased capacity for a smoother flow of vehicles and also a pedestrian friendly environment which will allow commuters and shoppers to reach the mall safely once being dropped off by the taxi operator. The informal traders will also be provided with more formal stalls as well as brand new bathroom facilities.”

When asked about some of the challenges that Broll Namibia was faced with during construction, Marco Wenk said that the company did not experience any major hick-ups at all. “Our biggest challenge has been the fact that overall a development to an existing centre always comes with a certain level of inconvenience to both shoppers and our existing retailers. In addition to this, limited parking was available over the season period during December but still we managed to record nearly 1,1 million people passing through our entrance for that month. Our aim is to ensure we keep the shopping environment as welcoming and conducive to shopping as possible - despite construction work. I would like to thank our loyal clients for bearing with us. We know that the noise and dust at times was not a pleasure and yet you still supported us.
Thank you once again and we assure you that the new Wernhil Park Shopping Centre will have been worth the wait.”

Says Roux-ché Locke, O&L Group Manager: Public Relations: “We are extremely happy to be able to at least once a year – during the season of giving – extend a friendly hand and heart towards our Namibian children and bring some joy into their lives. This is also our way of saying “thank you” to the communities for their support throughout the year. Namibia and her beautiful people are very dear to the heart of O&L, and it is our wish to make a difference especially in the lives of the future of our country – our children. ”

The children were treated to hotdogs, Oshikandela, a giant cake, ice-cream and watermelons and, despite the good rains, they enjoyed the slip-and-slides, jumping castles and face-painting.

Forming part of O&L’s community involvement initiatives, the event was supported by its operating companies namely NBL, Model Pick n Pay, Hangana Seafood, Namibia Dairies, Milky Lane, Windhoek Schlachterei, Broll Namibia, Midgard Country Estate and the O&L Centre.

Dr. Christina Swart-Opperman also thanked the Trust’s partners – Santam, Mutual and Federal, the American Embassy, the Economist, Standard Bank as well as the broader Namibian society - who supported the event.
“Christmas is about showing generosity and care to those we love. It is our wish that this happy day for our children will not only be felt at Christmas but all year round,” said Dr. Christina Swart-Opperman.

Big things are brewing – Launch of Windhoek Draught 750ml RB Date Published: 2010-09-22
Big things are brewing Namibia Breweries has recently conducted consumer research to review its brand portfolio in line with the company’s objective to build a winning brand portfolio.

The research is conducted annually with the aim to assess the strength of Namibia Breweries’ brands as measured in terms of bonding, emotional appeal, and admiration.

While the research has highlighted a distinct strength across Namibia Breweries brands, it clearly indicated that consumers wanted their favourite brand in a pack that offered value for money. So far the brand has been available in 440ml can and 440 ml non returnable bottle only. While the can was ideal for outdoor occasions, this pack limited the brand in terms of drinking occasions. To maximise the brand’s drinking occasion and to unlock further opportunities, Namibia Breweries has effective 15 September extended its pack offering by introducing a new 750ml returnable bottle for the Namibian market. The premium offering will be at the recommended price of N$ 98.75 per case including V.A.T.

NBL speaks on Responsible Drinking Date Published: 2010-09-20
NBL speaks on Responsible Drinking Namibia Breweries Limited says it believes that beer can be enjoyed as part of a healthy balanced lifestyle, if enjoyed responsibly. However, the company is also aware of a small segment of the population which engages in irresponsible drinking. In keeping with its role in society, NBL has over the years supported various initiatives aimed at discouraging harmful and irresponsible drinking. This includes targeted preventive interventions such as the “Too Much is Too Much”, and “THINK AHEAD – Don’t drink and Drive” campaigns.

Last year NBL took its educational role a step further by adopting the internationally acclaimed Diageo DRINKiQ programme as part of the company’s Zero to Hero programme. To date more than 600 NBL employees have attended DRINKiQ – a programme which has also been incorporated in the company’s induction programme. Patricia Hoeksema, Corporate Social Investment Manager at NBL, elaborates: “DRINKiQ is an interactive session which opens the floor to talk about alcohol issues by looking at amongst others, drinking culture, patterns, harmful practices, and also identifies what constitutes the responsible enjoyment of alcoholic beverages. The programme also equips DRINKiQ participants to make responsible choices and provides interesting facts and learning.”

NBL says it was inundated with requests by the public to provide DRINKiQ to business leaders, policy makers and role models. In response, NBL has rolled out the programme to external stakeholders. To date 152 participants have attended the programme. Amongst many who attended the programme are the Deputy Minister and officials of the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, members of the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA), City Police and Nampol. The participants have revealed that they have learned a lot about alcohol, the effects, and how to ensure that it can be enjoyed responsibly. Concludes Hoeksema: “We are extremely satisfied with the success of the programme thus far. We know that it has already contributed towards making people more aware of the effects of over-consumption. In the long run, we hope that everyone will be able to enjoy our products responsibly and that it can be part of a healthy lifestyle.”

Namibia Breweries (NBL) as part of the Recycle Namibia Forum (RNF) has recently sponsored 10 cases of Fruitree juices to the Elim Primary School Windhoek for showing the highest volume growth in recyclables collected by end July 2010 as part of the annual Schools Recycling Competition.

Namibia Breweries is a founding member of the Recycle Namibia Forum and also a sponsor of the Schools Recycling competition. Patricia Hoeksema, NBL’s Corporate Social Investment Manager, says that the competition was piloted last year with 10 schools participating. “The students at Elim School were very innovative an organized more than the ordinary clean-up. They ensured that they clean out all their old white paper and filing systems – leaving them with a whopping 13,5 ton of recyclables collected by the end of July 2010,” says Patricia Hoeksema.

The school which collects the largest quantity of recyclables by the end of October 2010 is set to win N$10 000 – a welcome boost for many schools’ development funds.

Pick & Pay Namibia Award Ceremony Date Published: 2010-08-20
Pick & Pay Namibia Award Ceremony On 6 August Pick n Pay held an award ceremony for staff of Model Pick n Pay Namibia, thereby recognizing their employees for outstanding performance.
This was a first for Model Pick n Pay and also a first for the Group. Henry Feris, MD of Model Pick & Pay said, that it was important for them to recognize the staff as they play a vital role in the overall success of the company and not just within the bigger Group. "The awards , which focused on EBIT targets, percentage growth, merit and overall winner, were greatly appreciated by staff as they felt that they were being recognized in their own company and amongst their peers and not just as part of the overall Group which usually represents tough competition.

I feel that our own awards have stimulated extra encouragement and in a sense internal competition amongst the guys/girls - which is always a good thing." He added that special recognition should go to the girls (Store Managers) - who were part of the top runners - with Petronella Samwele of Katima being the overall winner.

The Model Pick & Pay awards which were attended by, amongst others, the CEO (Peter Gruttemeyer) and Chairman of Model Pick & Pay, will become a yearly highlight on the Model Pick & Pay calendar and during the next round the aim is to invite representatives of the different stores with their Store managers to the function in order to ensure that everyone in the chain is recognized.

NBL-3 in a row clean-ups Date Published: 2010-07-26
3 In a row Clean-ups 3 in a row clean-ups sponsored by NBL

Having been invited by 3 different town councils in the North to sponsor their clean-up activities, NBL took this initiative a step further by not only sponsoring t-shirts and soft drinks for the almost 3 000 participants of the Okahao and Oshikuku clean-ups on the 24th, and the Ondangwa clean-up on the 26th of June – but bringing in fellow Recycle Namibia Forum (RNF) members Rent-a-drum and 4H Namibia to provide some basic environmental education and ensure that all the materials collected are recycled.
According to Patricia Hoeksema, NBL’s Corporate Social Investment Manger, all three events were very well organized and the municipalities of Okahao, Oshikuku and Ondangwa all embraced the notion of recycling as they see this as an opportunity not only to extend the lifespan of their dumpsites, and practice sustainable waste management, but also to create awareness amongst the community and even create jobs for the unemployed. It was not only school children and members of the community who participated, but also municipal officials, and Namibia breweries’ employees from the Oshakati depot, while Rent-a-drum provided a vehicle and staff to facilitate the sorting and collection.
4 H with whom NBL conducted more than 20 clean-ups in the past year, again took the lead in educating the young about the importance of good hygene, waste management and recycling.

All of these items collected in Oshikuku were sorted and all recyclables removed by Rent-a-drum and sent to the nearest market for recycling.

Urbock shared the stand with the Namibia Tourism Board and visitors were treated to fresh Urbock and delicious oysters. The brand gave a good account of its intrinsic values and was well received. In its home market, Urbock impressed visitors at the Namibia Tourism Expo held during early June where the combination of Urbock and oysters again provided a great connoisseur tasting.

A traditional, copper red beer is brewed by Namibia Breweries once per year. It is only available as of May, in limited quantities.

The taste of Namibian adventure, Windhoek Lager launched in the UK Date Published: 2010-05-26
Namibia’s own Windhoek Lager on 19 May was officially launched in the United Kingdom (UK) as part of Namibia Breweries’ global brewing and licensing agreement with Diageo.

The launch event was held at the National Geographic in London and saw the attendance of an estimated 80 invited guests including Sven Thieme (Chairman, Namibia Breweries), John Fitzgerald (Global Marketing Director, Namibia Breweries), Nick Blasquez (Managing Director, Diageo Africa), Simon Litherland (General Manager, Diageo UK), Diageo employees, media, and key trade partners.

Brewed in and imported from Namibia, Windhoek Lager is marketed by Diageo Great Britain as part of an ambitious plan to make Windhoek Lager a top ten World Beer within 15 months of launch, targeting primarily 25-45 year old male premium beer drinkers. The brands credentials are quality, its Namibian provenance and sense of adventure.

Appearing in new cluster packs, Windhoek Lager has been available at Tesco, Morrisons and other major grocery retailers in the World Beers section since late April at a Recommended Retail Price of £ 4.29 for a pack of 4 x 330ml bottles. The new cluster stands out through distinctiveness and provenance.

World Beer is defined as “A lager beer that is the national beer of a country but a brand that is not yet truly global”. Windhoek Lager will also be available in selected “prestige bars” in key areas in five cities: London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester and Brighton.

The UK thus joined Kenya, Uganda and Cameroon on the list of countries, outside Namibia and South Africa, in which Windhoek Lager is supported through local advertising and marketing activities.

Windhoek Lager launches in Kenya and Uganda Date Published: 2010-04-13
Windhoek Lager launches in Kenya and Uganda Namibia’s leading premium beer Windhoek Lager is poised to make steadfast inroads into the East African market following the brand’s recent launches in the Kenyan and Ugandan markets.

East African Breweries Limited, a subsidiary of Diageo, has acquired the rights to market and distribute the brand in the region on the basis of Namibia Breweries’ global brewing and licensing agreement with Diageo.
On 07 April, the brand was launched to approximate 50 corporate executives, entrepreneurs, key distributors and media representatives in Nairobi, Kenya. Here Windhoek Lager will be available in a modern, green 330 ml bottle in a selection of top-end bars throughout country targeting the discerning beer drinkers.

The Ugandan launch was held on 08 April under a “15th century” theme to signify the historic origin of the Reinheitsgebot – the purity law according to which Windhoek Lager is brewed. Held at the Sheraton Ball Room in Kampala, the launch was attended by an estimated 80 attendees including top corporate executives, distributors and media practitioners.

Fredy Piepmeyer, a seasoned Brewer at Namibia Breweries, attended the launches. He relates how well Windhoek Lager was received in both markets. He said "It was important for us to share the passion we have for our Namibian heritage and German brewing standards while at the same time stressing the purity, uniqueness and originality of our beer.”
Kenya and Uganda thus joined Cameroon on the list of countries, outside Namibia and South Africa, in which Windhoek Lager is supported through local advertising and marketing activities.

Namibia Breweries in World Bank project Namibia Breweries in
World Bank project on trade and technology transfer in Southern Africa

On 23 February the role of trade and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as transmission channels for technology transfer in Southern Africa was the focal point during an interview conducted at Namibia Breweries.

Desmond van Jaarsveld welcomed the members of the research team and answered questions which looked at Namibia Breweries’ international operations and how those have fed back into the company’s product and process development. Furthermore the interview sought to uncover to what extent FDI, either by the company or by competitors operating in the Namibian market, has affected innovation at Namibia Breweries.

Namibia is one of the countries which had been selected for the study with NBL having been identified as one of the few Namibian companies with an innovation agenda and the capacity to absorb technology through trade and investment relations. The interview was held by a research team comprising World Bank staff, consultants from the University of Cape Town and Southern African Institute of International Affairs. The findings are expected to be publicised in due course.

Members of the research team...F.l.t.r.: Itzhak Goldberg (World Bank), Peter Draper (South African Institute of International Affairs), Desmond van Jaarsveld (NBL), David Kaplan (University of Cape Town), Smita Kuriakose (World Bank), and Eric Woods (University of Cape Town).

Namibia Breweries appoints designated driver service provider Date Published: 2010-03-11
Namibia Breweries appoints designated driver service provider Namibia Breweries has effective 01 February 2010 appointed small medium enterprise Dial-a-cab as designated driver service provider for the company’s employees in a bid to further promote responsible drinking.

The appointment aims to provide transport to employees for all social occasions as an alternative to drinking and driving while simultaneously supporting Namibia Breweries’ don’t drink and drive campaign Think Ahead; and DRINKiQ - a training programme borrowed from NBL’s international partner Diageo tailored around imparting facts about alcohol usage while promoting responsible drinking.

Desmond van Jaarsveld on 02 March 2010 during the event to officiate the appointment said that the company’s employees now benefit from favourable rates when using the service in their private capacity. Namibia Breweries employs in excess of 600 employees. “While employees are encouraged to plan ahead and take a lift with Dial-a-cab when going out, the service also includes possibilities for an extra driver for the vehicle in the event of an unplanned social event,” said Van Jaarsveld.

The concept of a "designated driver" refers to selecting a person to remain sober, as the driver of a vehicle, while others are allowed to drink. It is intended as a safe alternative to driving under the influence. The designated driver concept was developed in Scandinavia over several decades beginning in the 1920s, leading to a formalised designated driver programme in those countries in the 1980s.

O&L Christmas Party for orphans and vulnerable children Date Published: 2010-02-24
O&L OVC Christmas Party On 25 November 2009 the Group held its annual Christmas party for 150 orphans and vulnerable children – between the ages of 2 to 8 years old - as part of its corporate social responsibility program. Running in its sixth year, the event aimed at bringing joy and happiness to orphans and vulnerable children and was held at the premises of our sister company - Namibia Breweries Limited.

Apart from slip and slides, jumping castles and face-painting, the kids were treated to a giant cake, ice-cream, watermelons, hotdogs, Oshikandela, Pepsi and goodie bags sponsored by operating companies under the O&L umbrella.
Roux-ché Locke, O&L Group Manager: Public Relations said: “Namibia has one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world, creating a crisis for a generation of children. Research organizations estimate that 180,000–200,000 children under 18 have lost one or both parents. Of that total, approximately two-thirds were orphaned due to AIDS-related illnesses. The number of orphans continues to rise, and the Namibian Ministry of Health and Social Services anticipates that by 2020 it will exceed 250,000.

The relationship between HIV and poverty is like a double-edged sword. Each contributes to the other, thereby worsening the situation for those affected. Other overlapping and contributing factors include gender-inequalities, a loss of social cohesion within the extended family, and rapid urbanisation. As with any tragedy of escalating proportions, children are the most affected and suffer from multiple losses. Most prominent to emerge from the research on Namibia are the needs for food security, access to education and social services, and psycho-social support.

We are extremely happy to be able to at least once a year – during the season of giving – extend a friendly hand towards these children and bring some joy into their lives.”

Forming part of O&L’s community involvement initiatives, the event was organised by employees from various operating companies namely Namibia Breweries, Model Pick n Pay, Hangana Seafood, Namibia Dairies, Milky Lane, Windhoek Schlachterei, Broll Namibia, Dimension Data and the O&L Centre.
