Date Published: 2013-06-17 |
|
Windhoek, 12 June 2013 - Windhoek Schlachterei has proudly announced that this year the company celebrates 40 years in business.
Robin Rhode, Brand Manager at Namibia Dairies said that Windhoek Schlachterei was established in 1973 by the late Karel Kessler. He adds: “The main purpose of the enterprise was to ensure a permanent market for at least a portion of Mr. Kessler’s cattle production and nine other farmers who supplied him with cattle. The building in which the factory is still housed was originally used as a warehouse for fruit and vegetables and was renovated to become a meat processing plant. In 1979 Ohlthaver & List, took over the business.”
Windhoek Schlachterei was fully integrated into Namibia Dairies in 2010. Namibia Dairies own the largest cold chain network in Namibia. Rhode: “Windhoek Schlachterei is a proudly Namibian company, with a strong 40 year old Namibian heritage. We source a significant amount of our raw materials locally; therefore strongly supporting locally produced and manufactured produce. We are home to 58 factory workers and a Fleischmeister, as well as numerous other specialized staff members.”
Windhoek Schlachterei (Proprietary) Limited, is known for its high quality processed meat produced in the European continental tradition. The company is the second-largest processed meat producer in the country and has a local market share of over 35%.

| Namibia Dairies milk quota reduction |
Date Published: 2013-02-26 |
|
25 February 2013
Given Namibia’s milk production standards that prohibit the use of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s), hormones, antibiotic feed supplements etc., which are not necessarily applicable in some other markets such as South Africa, Namibian producers have a higher raw milk production cost. Namibian producers are therefore disadvantaged compared to foreign producers who do not need to comply with Namibia’s stringent requirements. As the regulatory framework in Namibia does not support a level playing field between importers and local dairy producers, the competitiveness of the industry is under strain and the current severe market conditions put pressure on selling prices that result in unmanageable milk surpluses.
In light of these pressures, Namibia Dairies has implemented a number of measures to support the Namibian dairy industry. These have included measures such as packaging innovations, focus on buying local, and various pricing promotions. Despite all these efforts, the local market is still unable to absorb the current local milk supply in the face of the high level of cheaper imports.
Over the past few months Namibia Dairies and the Dairy Producers Association (DPA) have engaged on numerous occasions to discuss the challenges facing the primary dairy producers in Namibia, and what type of measures need to be implemented to ensure the long term survival and sustainability of the industry.
Namibia Dairies has already cut back planned milk production at its own milk production unit at its !Aimab Superfarm and has no option but to cut its raw milk intake further by reducing its milk intake from local dairy producers until such time as market conditions have improved.
Namibia Dairies is engaging all role players to find sustainable long-term solutions to support the local dairy industry. We thank the Namibian public for their continuous support and encourage them to continue consuming Namibian brands.

| Midgard Country Estate now managed by Kempinski |
Date Published: 2011-03-09 |
|
Due to the increased interest and media enquiries into the Midgard Country Estate, the O&L Group would like to clarify the media release that was issued on Tuesday, 8 March 2011.
The Ohlthaver & List Group of Companies wishes to emphatically state that it remains the full owner of Midgard Country Estate. Kempinski Hotels, an international partner of Ohlthaver and List (O&L) Group of Companies in Namibia, has been awarded the management and operation of Midgard Country Estate. Chris Muth, General Manager, Kempinski Projects in Namibia said “After the successful takeover of the management of Mokuti Lodge - another O&L leisure property - in 2008, and the implementation of the Kempinski brand within that newly refurbished product, Kempinski has been awarded the operation and management agreement of the Midgard property as the latest addition to Kempinski’s unique African portfolio”.
The first phases of integration of the Midgard Country Estate within Kempinski are underway with evident synergies in various functions such as sales and marketing, human resources, finance and operations. The project shall witness immediate influx of talents and resources to positively influence service standards and tangibly enhance the guest experience.
Ulrich Eckhardt, President, Middle East and Africa for Kempinski said “Our mission in Namibia is to become the favoured hotel choice for our guests and the preferred employer in hospitality industry in the country offering unparalleled service standards and superior quality levels of luxury hospitality with great focus on training, education and talent development, whilst ensuring the optimum financial performance for the Owners”.
Sven Thieme, Executive Chairman of O&L Group of Companies confirmed the agreement and stated that Kempinski Hotels, which is renowned for managing and operating luxury hotels around the world since 1897, has been indeed awarded the management of the Midgard Country Estate, however, the initial operation of the property shall run under the Estate trade name and not the Kempinski brand at this stage. “This venture will not only add value to the property but to the Namibian hospitality industry as a whole. The Midgard Country Estate, under ownership of the O&L Group of Companies, shall benefit from the international exposure, Kempinski global expertise and the association with a world class luxury hotel brand.” said Thieme.
“The decision to integrate the Midgard Country Estate within Kempinski portfolio was made with a long-term vision to establish a leisure division within Ohlthaver and List Group incorporating all its hotels and lodges in addition to the food and beverage outlets under one umbrella.” added Thieme.

| Wernhil Park Phase 3 |
Date Published: 2011-02-17 |

Windhoek, 16 February 2011
The Ohlthaver and List Group of Companies has announced that construction of Phase 3 of Wernhil Park is progressing according to schedule, with several prominent retailers already busy fitting out their stores. Marco Wenk, Managing Director of Broll Namibia has announced that construction at the Southern mall extension is nearing completion, with the Northern mall extension’s completion date having been set for end of June 2011.
“Several major retailers have received their shops for fit-out which can take up to 2 – 3 months to complete especially for the bigger shops such as Edgars and Truworths. We are extremely excited that everything is on track and can say with confidence that we are on schedule and all major tenants trading in the southern mall, located next to our upper parking area, will be open for trade by the end of March 2011. Tenants trading on the northern mall side above the taxi rank will commence trading as from 1 June 2011.”
Upon completion, Wernhil Park will boast with some new and exciting shops, which will be a first for Namibia such as Mr Price Sport and DFX. The new Edgars store opening on 1 June 2011, and which is sure to dazzle all existing and new clients, will be one of the largest retailers yet to open in Namibia. Wernhil will furthermore add approximately 750 parking bays as part of its extension, increasing its total parking bays to approximately 1,500. Other exciting shops opening in Wernhil will be Total Sports, Miladys, Sterns, Fashion Express, as well as a new and exciting restaurant, to name but a few.
“We also look forward to the new taxi rank facility which was completely redesigned to ensure a more efficient traffic flow to enable more taxi vehicles to pass through the facility at a faster rate”, continued Marco Wenk. “The new taxi rank has been designed by traffic engineers with both the taxi drivers and passengers in mind, thus ensuring increased capacity for a smoother flow of vehicles and also a pedestrian friendly environment which will allow commuters and shoppers to reach the mall safely once being dropped off by the taxi operator. The informal traders will also be provided with more formal stalls as well as brand new bathroom facilities.”
When asked about some of the challenges that Broll Namibia was faced with during construction, Marco Wenk said that the company did not experience any major hick-ups at all. “Our biggest challenge has been the fact that overall a development to an existing centre always comes with a certain level of inconvenience to both shoppers and our existing retailers. In addition to this, limited parking was available over the season period during December but still we managed to record nearly 1,1 million people passing through our entrance for that month. Our aim is to ensure we keep the shopping environment as welcoming and conducive to shopping as possible - despite construction work. I would like to thank our loyal clients for bearing with us. We know that the noise and dust at times was not a pleasure and yet you still supported us. Thank you once again and we assure you that the new Wernhil Park Shopping Centre will have been worth the wait.”

| Ohlthaver & List in association with Christina Swart-Opperman AIDS Orphan Foundation Trust host Christmas party for orphans and vulnerable children |
Date Published: 2010-11-30 |
|

The seventh (7th) annual Ohlthaver and List Group of Companies (O&L) Christmas party for orphans and vulnerable children was held on the 18th November 2010 at the premises of the O&L subsidiary, Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL). This year, the O&L Group joined hands and partnered with the well-established Christina Swart-Opperman AIDS Orphan Foundation Trust to make this year’s Christmas party bigger and better! The Christina Swart-Opperman Aids Orphan Foundation Trust embarked upon Christmas Tree Projects since 2005 and the beneficiaries of these projects thus far have been the children who form part of current projects assisted by the Trust.
Says the Founder of the Trust, Dr. Christina Swart-Opperman: “I am absolutely delighted to partner with the Ohlthaver & List Group of Companies this year as the impact of the Christmas Tree Project is so much bigger. The result of this partnership is that approximately 1600 children will receive gifts this year while we have invited approximately 300 children from Mother’s Voice, Olof Palme, Maria Primary, Bambi Kindergarten and Bishop Kameeta for the handover at this special Christmas party. In total, seventeen (17) projects from Windhoek and surrounding areas will benefit from this initiative this year”.
The Christmas party for orphans and vulnerable children is part of the O&L Group’s corporate social responsibility program and aims to bring joy and happiness to these children during the significant period of Christmas.
Says Roux-ché Locke, O&L Group Manager: Public Relations: “We are extremely happy to be able to at least once a year – during the season of giving – extend a friendly hand and heart towards our Namibian children and bring some joy into their lives. This is also our way of saying “thank you” to the communities for their support throughout the year. Namibia and her beautiful people are very dear to the heart of O&L, and it is our wish to make a difference especially in the lives of the future of our country – our children. ”
The children were treated to hotdogs, Oshikandela, a giant cake, ice-cream and watermelons and, despite the good rains, they enjoyed the slip-and-slides, jumping castles and face-painting.
Forming part of O&L’s community involvement initiatives, the event was supported by its operating companies namely NBL, Model Pick n Pay, Hangana Seafood, Namibia Dairies, Milky Lane, Windhoek Schlachterei, Broll Namibia, Midgard Country Estate and the O&L Centre.
Dr. Christina Swart-Opperman also thanked the Trust’s partners – Santam, Mutual and Federal, the American Embassy, the Economist, Standard Bank as well as the broader Namibian society - who supported the event.
“Christmas is about showing generosity and care to those we love. It is our wish that this happy day for our children will not only be felt at Christmas but all year round,” said Dr. Christina Swart-Opperman.

Big things are brewing – Launch of Windhoek Draught 750ml RB
For immediate release
Namibia Breweries has recently conducted consumer research to review its brand portfolio in line with the company’s objective to build a winning brand portfolio.
The research is conducted annually with the aim to assess the strength of Namibia Breweries’ brands as measured in terms of bonding, emotional appeal, and admiration.
While the research has highlighted a distinct strength across Namibia Breweries brands, it clearly indicated that consumers wanted their favourite brand in a pack that offered value for money. So far the brand has been available in 440ml can and 440 ml non returnable bottle only. While the can was ideal for outdoor occasions, this pack limited the brand in terms of drinking occasions. To maximise the brand’s drinking occasion and to unlock further opportunities, Namibia Breweries has effective 15 September extended its pack offering by introducing a new 750ml returnable bottle for the Namibian market. The premium offering will be at the recommended price of N$ 98.75 per case including V.A.T.
