NBL - Schools encouraged to increase recycling volumes Date Published: 2010-09-09
Namibia Breweries (NBL) as part of the Recycle Namibia Forum (RNF) has recently sponsored 10 cases of Fruitree juices to the Elim Primary School Windhoek for showing the highest volume growth in recyclables collected by end July 2010 as part of the annual Schools Recycling Competition.

Namibia Breweries is a founding member of the Recycle Namibia Forum and also a sponsor of the Schools Recycling competition. Patricia Hoeksema, NBL’s Corporate Social Investment Manager, says that the competition was piloted last year with 10 schools participating. She said ”The competition has grown significantly to 22 Windhoek-based schools and 3 schools in Tsumeb taking part this year.” This year, as part of the competition, NBL provided an extra incentive of 10 cases of Fruitree juices to encourage schools to increase their recycling volumes by end of July.

“The students at Elim School were very innovative an organized more than the ordinary clean-up. They ensured that they clean out all their old white paper and filing systems – leaving them with a whopping 13,5 ton of recyclables collected by the end of July 2010,” says Patricia Hoeksema.

The school which collects the largest quantity of recyclables by the end of October 2010 is set to win N$10 000 – a welcome boost for many schools’ development funds.

Namibia Breweries awards bursaries Date Published: 2010-02-24
A bursary is a scholarship granted to a university student in need. The word lends its origin from the medieval Latin bursāria, or bursa which means purse. It was in this spirit that Namibia Breweries on 12 January 2010 opened its purse to lend support to young school leavers as part of its long term plan to develop talents in Engineering - a discipline highly regarded yet lacking sufficient supply to satisfy Namibia’s labour market.

Fillemon Simaneka Enkono received a bursary to study Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Namibia while Diethelm Uwe Rust was awarded a bursary to study for a National Diploma (Mechatronics) at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, South Africa.

Julia Muetudhana, Talent Manager at Namibia Breweries, says bursaries are awarded annually as part of NBL’s strategic business plan to develop young talent in the discipline of Engineering thus lessening the skills scarcity on the Namibian labour market. Julia relates that in doing so Namibia Breweries would develop Engineers with the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude to fulfil the operational NBL’s requirement. “We are proud to award these bursaries and see ourselves as a social partner who is committed to invest in our country and its people thereby also promoting our country’s economic advancement both regionally and globally,’’ says Julia.

Namibia Breweries has this year received sixty five applications. The combined value of the bursaries is N$ 100,000.000 which amounts to N$ 50,000.00 per recipient.
